“You will laugh, cry, and question everything society has ever told you to be true.” NY Theatre Guide

It’s the Torch Theatre’s 40th Anniversary Year, add an award-winning director, Peter Doran, and a spectacular production that packs an almighty punch….. Sounds too good to be true?

Well, think again because 2017 means only one thing: the Torch Theatre Autumn Production and a spectacular re-working of that huge favourite, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, a fabulous vehicle with which to celebrate the theatre’s 40th birthday.

Dale Wasserman’s adaptation of Ken Kesey’s classic American novel tells the story of institutional madness, where the mentally insane are drugged, electrocuted and lobotomised in order to enforce a chilling notion of sanity, one where obedience and conformity are the only acceptable indications of mental health.

Cuckoo’s Nest stars Randle P. McMurphy, a petty criminal who accepts the court’s decision to send him to an asylum for his mental health to be assessed, rather than spend another term in the ‘slammer’. As a natural-born rebel, McMurphy soon questions the asylum’s procedures and begins to rally his fellow patients in increasingly daring acts of autonomy. However, such acts, as opposed to the delusional ones the asylum authorities perpetuate, are not tolerated, and McMurphy soon learns that those authorities, epitomised in the character of Nurse Ratched, have terrible ways of forcing you to conform.

Anarchic, mischievous and permeated with Kesey’s visionary brilliance this play, which “fair makes the old brain reel,” is a ruthlessly engaging and endlessly electrifying goddam roar of protest; there just ain’t no mistakin’ it.

“You gotta laugh…especially when things aren’t funny.” Randle P. McMurphy
