YOUTH THEATRE NEWS & UPDATES SECTION

Please keep an eye on this page for news and updates on the Youth Theatre.

The Youth Theatre will re-start this week on Thursday 9 September 2010.

The Torch Theatre continues its commitment to the County’s young people, and with the sponsorship and support of Pembrokeshire County Council, we have a dedicated Youth Theatre and Education Officer. The new Studio Theatre, sponsored by Milford Haven Port Authority, gives us more opportunities to share the magic of theatre with young people.

Actor, writer and director Dave Ainsworth leads our work and he brings a wealth of experience to the Torch Youth Theatre and our work in schools and colleges. Dave has worked in theatre and education for over 14 years both locally and nationally – he was a stand-up comedian for a while too!

As of June 2010, the Youth Theatre has a new Youth Committee which will hold meetings with the Torch Theatre Board of Management on a regular basis.  The reps are Amber Phillips, Caitlin Shannahan and Sophie Murray.

The Torch Youth Theatre has grown by 300% in under two years! Never have numbers been so healthy. Weekly there are 75 members aged between 11 and 18 participating in three groups. Each week they learn about stagecraft mainly through improvisation. Students from Milford Haven, Tasker Milward, Sir Thomas Picton, Greenhill, Pembroke, St David’s and Crymych are represented, in fact every Secondary School in Pembrokeshire except Fishguard! We also have members from Pembrokeshire College and Whitland. Such is our popularity that over 20 people are on the waiting list at any one time – however if you are still interested in joining, please read on….
Youth Theatre meets weekly, on Thursdays, during school term times and costs just £3.00 each week. Due to its popularity, we have expanded this year to include three groups, which, as from September 2009 will meet as follows

Group One: Years Seven & Eight     5.00 – 6.00 pm
Group Two: Years Nine & Ten      6.00 – 7.30 pm
Group Three: Years Eleven, Twelve & Thirteen     7.30 – 9.00 pm

The Torch Youth Theatre provides a stimulating environment for young people to develop a practical understanding of the art of theatre and a great opportunity to meet new friends and have some old fashioned fun! You don’t have to have a burning desire to be a professional actor or even to work in theatre, but you do need enthusiasm and commitment so that our Youth Theatre Programme can help to inspire you, build your confidence, and introduce a whole host of skills to last you a lifetime.

Demand for places is very high, and there IS a waiting list, but if you are interested, then contact Christine O’Reilly on info@torchtheatre.co.uk
