Blog No. 35 - Amelie Cartledge
The Torch Theatre welcomed Amelie Cartledge for two months of works experience. Read about her adventures in what she describes as ‘Pure Magic.’
What began as a simple placement requirement for a Master’s in Arts Management at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama quickly turned into a two-month journey full of creativity, collaboration, and unforgettable moments at The Torch Theatre in Milford Haven.
From day one, stepping into a buzzing rehearsal room for The Bangers & Chips Explosion, the energy was undeniable. Young performers filled the space with chaos, laughter, and effortless brilliance, and it was clear this wasn’t going to be an ordinary placement. Behind the scenes, every task had a creative heartbeat. Whether sourcing quirky props, delving into costume research, or shaping press releases and cast videos for social media, each project offered a window into the beating heart of a busy producing theatre. The work wasn’t just about promotion or logistics, it was about storytelling, accessibility, and impact.
One particularly meaningful contribution involved designing easy-read materials and character guides for audience members with access needs. It was a powerful reminder that theatre isn’t just about what happens on stage—it’s about who gets to experience it.
The adventure didn’t stop there. I was given creative control over a community craft session inspired by Lilo & Stitch. The session brought families together in a swirl of glitter, glue, and paper skirts. It was messy, magical, and deeply rewarding. There was also a chance to contribute to strategic conversations, everything from safeguarding policies to rural transport barriers, plus supporting grant applications for the National Theatre and National Lottery. A daunting yet insightful task.
Two months passed in what felt like the blink of an eye, but the impact will last far longer. This placement wasn’t just about learning the ropes, it was about becoming part of a team that believes in the power of theatre to bring people together and spark joy in unexpected ways.
The Torch Theatre is more than a theatre, it's a community. And for one very lucky arts management student, it was the perfect place to learn, grow, and be inspired.
Thank you, Tim, and Thank you to everyone at the Torch Theatre. What a ride!
