Blog No. 42 - Mentrau Iaith

It was the turn of the South West Region of Mentrau Iaith Cymru to host the annual conference this year and it was decided to pay a visit to Pembrokeshire. When thinking about possible locations, I happened to be at the Torch Theatre with Adam yn yr Ardd planting daffodil bulbs as part of the 'Gerddi Gleision' project and thought, this is a good place to host a Conference!

So, following months of preparation, representatives from all over Wales, Chief Officers and members of the Management Boards of some of the Mentrau, came together with MIC and Welsh Government staff for a two-day conference in Milford Haven - with many visiting the area for the first time.

We had a variety of interesting presentations and sessions and had an opportunity to discuss our work and the Mentrau Iaith's contribution to developing the Welsh language within their communities. Every area is different and it is important that the Mentrau's work reflects that and it’s great to hear the experiences of other areas and have the opportunity to learn more about different forms of running successful projects.

As the Conference travels around Wales it is always good to hear presentations about local projects and Cris Tomos talked about a number of community asset projects that have benefited from grants and purchases from the local community. Nico Dafydd came to discuss the exciting developments of Cwmni Fflach Co-operative in Cardigan with people investing in the scheme.

There were also sessions on anti-racism awareness, the Welsh Government's Vision 2050, the discussion behind Mentrau Iaith, getting updates on a visit to conferences in foreign countries, and a session from the Arts Council - giving a lot of ideas and thinking about new ways of working together.

We experienced a warm welcome from Jackie and all the staff at the Torch and the meals were particularly good! The weather was wonderful and we had an opportunity to walk (or run for the active!) around the marina – and following the sessions it was great taking advantage of the fresh air. The provision at the hotel - the Tŷ Hotel was also great and we had an evening meal at Martha's Vineyard. It was all so convenient and we supported several local businesses and organisations.

Thank you to everyone for the welcome and cooperation!
