The Lion King Brings Back Memories
'The Lion King' has impressed and entertained people over the years and Brandon Williams, our community reviewer, went to see the film as part of Torch Theatre's Sunset Cinema in Saundersfoot Harbour. The film can be seen again in Cardigan Castle (August 14) and Saundersfoot Harbour (August 22).
Watch the sun rise on the Pride Lands as the sun sets in Pembrokeshire. The Torch Theatre brings you The Lion King, which, over thirty years later, still stands amongst the greats of animation. Grossing nearly $1 billion, it was released during the heart of Disney’s renaissance era, where the studio produced a string of critical and commercial successes. The biggest of those being The Lion King.
It tells the story of Simba, a young lion who is next in line to succeed his father, Mufasa, as King of Pride Rock, but faces a challenge for the throne from his uncle Scar.
This film holds a special place in my heart. As a child, I watched it hundreds of times, often multiple times a day, and it remains one of my favourite movies now.
The best children’s films and television shows are ones that not only never lose their sparkle as you get older, but ones that take on new meaning as you revisit them throughout your life.
For instance, as a child I saw myself in Simba’s days as a cub - guided by playful feelings of awe and adventure. Now, in my twenties, I see myself in the adult Simba - someone seeking to find their place in the world. And I suspect, in the future, I will relate more to Mufasa’s patriarchal role or, if an alternative lifestyle beckons, Rafiki’s sagely wisdom.
Moreover, as an adult, I appreciate the technical aspects of the film more. The music - courtesy of Hans Zimmer, with five iconic songs from Elton John and Tim Rice - is vibrant and stirring, capturing the African savannah through melody. The visuals are stunning and it’s clear how much the creative team’s trips to Kenya during production influenced it, with the majesty and mysticism of the area etched into the artwork.
The cast also deliver some of the most memorable voice performances of all-time - namely James Earl Jones, Jeremy Irons and Nathan Lane. There is a lot of talent in every facet of this movie and the heaps of passion they all bring makes it work wonders.
The Lion King will continue to be timeless because it infuses the beautiful hand drawn animation with rich, Shakespearean-based storytelling. The colour, imagery and emotion packed into each character, scene and musical sequence means an already enchanting tale is brought to life impeccably.
