Under Pembrokeshire Skies: Seascapes and Stones
Sam Farmer, an artist living and working in beautiful Pembrokeshire will host her first ever art exhibition at the Joanna Field Gallery at the Torch Theatre, Milford Haven this October. After a long and joyful career as a primary school teacher, she swapped wall displays and finger painting for canvas and brush, devoting herself to her creative passions: painting, making, and exploring the world through art.
Home is a rambling old vicarage she shares with her husband, three children (when they’re not off exploring and craving a full fridge), and Florrie the fluffy dog. Born and raised in Pembrokeshire, Sam knows its coastlines, footpaths, and hidden corners intimately - a lifelong relationship that runs deep through her work.
Her premier exhibition, Under Pembrokeshire Skies: Seascapes and Stones, is a celebration of that connection - an artistic love letter to her home, infused with the Welsh concept of Cynefin: the place where people feel most deeply rooted, where landscape, memory, and belonging meet.
“Hosting my first art exhibition is quite nerve wracking, putting myself out there when only family and close friends have seen my art work in the past. I’m hoping people will enjoy my paintings and through them reconnect with personal memories of places that mean something to them. The paintings are for sale, and it would be lovely to think that people would get daily pleasure from having these works in their homes. I also offer commissions so if there is a special place that someone would like me to paint, that’s something I can also do,” explained Sam.
“I have many friends coming to see the exhibition – both locally and from Bristol, Cardiff and Hereford and beyond and so it will also be an opportunity to celebrate,” concluded Sam who has close connections with the Torch with her son being a member of the Youth Theatre and recently playing a leading role in The Bangers and Chips Explosion.
Sam finds endless inspiration in the wild beauty around her. The rugged coastlines, shifting skies, and quiet moments shared in nature feed her imagination and infuse her paintings with energy, joy, and a strong sense of place. Through her work, she captures the magic of the natural world and invites us to reflect on our own connections to it.
Many of the paintings in this exhibition also feature in her recently published children’s book, Little Puffin’s Pembrokeshire Home. The story follows a curious puffin from Skomer Island who sets off to find a new home, discovering the wonders of Pembrokeshire along the way.
With this exhibition, Sam hopes to share colour, joy, and a renewed sense of connection - to our landscapes, our histories, and one another.
Under Pembrokeshire Skies: Seascapes and Stones can be seen at the Joanna Field Gallery from Saturday 4 October to the end of the month during Box Office opening times. Visit torchtheatre.co.uk or phone the Box Office on 01646 695267 for further information.
