The Torch Theatre’s popular ‘Movies & Memories’ film screenings continue, with a rare chance to enjoy on the big screen Rodgers and Hammerstein's ‘The King And I’ (Thursday 5 March, 2.00pm), one of the most popular musicals in cinema history. The film stars Deborah Kerr (From Here To Eternity) and Yul Brynner (The Magnificent Seven), who won an Academy Award for his role.

Brynner, reprising the role he'd polished to perfection on stage, plays the blustering, headstrong Siamese potentate who meets his match in the form of Anna Leonowens (Deborah Kerr), the prim and proper English widow he's hired to oversee the rearing of his huge, unruly flock of children. The delightful score, which also garnered an Oscar, includes three perennial favourite show tunes: "I Whistle a Happy Tune," "Getting to Know You," and "Shall We Dance?"

‘Movies & Memories’ screenings are designed to suit the needs of people living with dementia and memory loss, their family, carers and friends. Set in a relaxed environment, these films are shown with the house lights turned up and the sound levels turned down. Patrons can also sing along to any musical numbers should they wish to. Trained staff will also be on hand to give a very warm Torch Theatre welcome.

‘Movies & Memories’ is a collaboration between the Torch Theatre and PAVS (Pembrokeshire Association of Voluntary Services). PAVS' Cherry Evans (Community Connector for Dementia Supportive Communities) has said: "For a person living with dementia, watching a film in the cinema has many benefits. It can promote activity and stimulation of the mind, can be an important tool of reminiscence, and is associated with relaxation, engagement and, above all, enjoyment."

Tickets for the screening on Thursday 5 March are priced at £6.00 each, and entitle patrons to a Special Offer of a cup of tea or coffee with a slice of cake from Café Torch for £3.25 as part of their visit. For more information or to book tickets visit torchtheatre.co.uk or contact the Box Office on 01646 695267.

The next Movies & Memories screening is scheduled for Thursday 23 April. For information and updates keep an eye on the Torch Theatre website and look out for the upcoming April - July Film Guide.
