A Musical Masterpiece at the Torch

Coming to the Torch Theatre cinema screen on Tuesday 11 June, The Royal Opera will delight opera fans with its performance of ANDREA CHÉNIER. Sung in Italian with English subtitles, this opera has this week been awarded five stars by The Guardian and is one not to be missed.

With the Royal Opera Chorus, the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House and in a co-production with China National Centre for Performing Arts, Beijing and San Francisco Opera, ANDREA CHÉNIER described by The Guardian as “a thrilling account of an often remarkable work that sends you out into the street feeling elated and slightly jittery,” is a musical masterpiece.

Jonas Kaufmann, headlines David McVicar's spectacular staging of Giordano's epic historical drama of revolution and forbidden love, conducted by long-time collaborator Antonio Pappano, in this, his final production as Music Director for the Royal Opera.

At a glittering party in 18th-century Paris, the poet Andréa Chenier delivers an impassioned denunciation of Louis XVI. Five years later, the Revolution has given way to the Terror, transforming the power balance between Chénier, his beloved Maddalena, and Gérard, the man who could destroy him...
