Dan, who plays Boxer, tell us all about his role in Sycamore Gap
We’re all familiar with the Sycamore Gap tree that made the headlines in 2023 when it was illegally felled in Northumberland near Hadrian’s Wall. The event caused uproar across the globe and the felling of the ancient tree is the subject of Torch Youth Theatre’s spring show, sponsored by Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.
Anwen caught up with Dan, one of the actors who is playing the role of Boxer to find out more ...
What's the best part about being in this production?
I am really enjoying being challenged by playing a type of character that’s the opposite of who I am. Working out how and why they behave the way they do is exciting.
What's the hardest part about bringing your character to life?
The hardest part of bringing this character to life is finding the right way to say my lines because my character is so different to me. He is not very socially aware and he does not understand how to properly talk to others.
How do you memorize lines, and what's your favourite way to prepare?
I memorise lines by running through the script with my groups which helps me remember my cues. My favourite way to prepare is by acting it out because it helps me explore the character.
If you could play another role in the show, who would it be and why?
I’d like to play Linden because he’s an interesting character as he’s strange and rather complex.
Editor’s note: All the characters are named after types of trees hence Linden and Boxer.
How has Theatre helped you grow as a person?
It’s built my confidence, it’s also live which means I have to interact with the audience which has helped strengthen my social skills. It’s introduced me to all different types of people exposing me to different ways of acting.
What's your favourite line or moment for your character?
My favourite line is when I get called [REDACTED] as it’s funny. Editors note - you'll have to come along to find out what they call Dan's character in the play. They're teenagers so the choices are endless....
