Bar, Bee, and Q are on their way! Not forgetting the Big Bad Wolf!

Bar, Bee, and Q are on their way! The Three Little Pigs: The Musical will visit the Torch Theatre on Wednesday 29 and Thursday 30 October for a fun, heartwarming musical full of songs, laughter, and a Big Bad Wolf. And, it’s that Big Bad Wolf that Anwen from the marketing team at the Torch had a chat with ...

Tell us a bit about the Big Bad Wolf

I play the Big Bad Wolf, the famous villain we all know for ‘huffing, puffing and blowing your house down’. My character spends the duration of the story trying to find and capture the three little pigs to gobble them up for tea, facing many obstacles along the way, and being outsmarted by the pigs on many occasions.

What’s the best bit about the show?

The dynamic between the three little pigs is the absolute heart of the show. Celebrating a family bond between three very different pigs who each have their own individual personalities, their onstage chemistry is incredibly infectious and joyous to watch. Another highlight is the very impressive puppet used for the Wolf made by Little Angel Theatre Operated by two persons, its size and detail is captivating to watch on stage.

Describe the Wolf in three words

Unpredictable, naughty and bonkers.

Will the show make us laugh?

The show will absolutely make everyone laugh. There are jokes that children and adults will enjoy (the Wolf is very cheeky and loves a Greggs sausage roll). Be prepared for silly chaos that will have the kids cackling, and the occasional pun that parents will have fun with.

How many puppets are in the show?

In total there are three puppets in the show. The main feature being the Big Bad Wolf. But the very adorable Twit and Twoo make an appearance in the show as the Big Bad Wolf’s backing singers, two very cute and chirpy birds that add a fun touch to the Wolfs songs. Show Director, Matt Forbes, is also the Puppet Director for Lion King the musical, and also works as Associate Director on War Horse, which heavily features puppetry. So expect lots of fun tricks and range when it comes to the use of the puppets.

Can we expect singing and dancing? If so, what are your favourite songs and moves?

This is a musical written by renowned composers Stiles and Drewe and you can absolutely expect singing and dancing. The songs are very contemporary and incredibly catchy, so much so that I think the parents will be humming the tunes more than the children. What makes this score so impressive is that it’s hard to pick a favourite, and you’ll find everyone has a different favourite. But mine has to be ‘One, two, three Little Pigs’, it is very catchy and introduces you to the world of the show and the pigs characters. And where there is a song sung by the pigs, there will definitely be a move or two (these pigs can dance). The use of props also elevates the choreography adding more fun to the occasion (such as broomsticks, wheel-boroughs and very impressive stacks of bricks).

What have you introduced into your character to make him different?

I wanted to make the Big Bad Wolf fun and playful. I definitely wanted to make him a character that audiences will love to hate. I was aware that a lot of children will be watching so I have definitely explored finding that balance of being a villain, yet funny and likeable. And hopefully that has paid off. To look at the Wolf puppet, he looks very cheeky and youthful so I have tried to channel that into the character. I have said to many - imagine Jim Carrey in ‘The Mask’ combined with Del Boy from ‘Only Fools and Horses’ and add a hint of campness. It’s fun, unpredictable chaos.

Will there be a happy ending?

Let’s just say the musical stays very true to the original story. Good always conquers evil. But it’s the journey to that that will have you belly laughing and have the little ones in awe and on the edge of their seats.

Will the Three Little Pigs manage to unite to defeat the Big Bad Wolf?
