Rapunzel songs are fun, loud and catchy!

Pembrokeshire’s Sarah Benbow is the Musical Director for Rapunzel, Torch Theatre’s festive pantomime this December. Jenny from the Marketing Team caught up with Sarah to find out where she gets her inspiration from. Read more below.

Can you share some of your background history and journey into musical direction?

I have always loved working with individuals dreaming of becoming a professional performer, but was keen to work with those who have already made that journey, working as professional actors. I want to help them further develop their voices and explore characters through song and the role of MD allows me to do this. I LOVE IT!

Can you tell us a bit about what your role involves as Musical Director for Rapunzel?

After James has written the amazing songs, I work with the actors, helping them learn and interpret the songs, ready for the performance.

How would you describe the show’s music in three words?

Fun, loud and catchy!

How does the music help bring the story and characters to life?

It shows you a different side of the character and how they connect with the audience, telling their story through music.

Do you have a favourite song or musical moment in the show?

I love the boat song - it makes me laugh out loud and it gets stuck in my head after every rehearsal.

What’s it been like working with this year’s cast?

An amazing privilege - they are such a great group of talented actors.

How do you collaborate with Chelsey and the choreographer to make sure the music fits the action?

We discuss the lyrics, interpretation and characterisation of the song, checking that we are all on 'the same page' and coming from the same creative direction.

What’s your favourite part of the job? Rehearsals? Performances?

Seeing the audience's reactions. Rehearsals - seeing the show develop and grow is really exciting.
