The Bangers and Chips Explosion brought a riot of laughter and energy to the Torch Theatre last night, delivering a brilliantly bonkers performance full of charm, chaos, and chips (eventually). It reminded me of something straight out of a David Walliams book or a Roald Dahl story, full of quirky characters, unexpected twists, and delightfully madcap humour.
Even before the curtain rose, the atmosphere at the Torch was buzzing with excitement. As we queued for our seats, young children and families chatted eagerly, many spotting schoolmates and siblings on stage, adding a warm sense of community and shared anticipation. Set in a not-so-ordinary primary school, the story kicks off when the pupils stage a dramatic protest over the school lunch menu—sparking a chain of mad events involving mistaken identities, unexpected visitors, and a very unconventional rescue mission.
Without giving too much away, it’s a wildly fun plot packed with twists, silly surprises, and perfectly timed chaos. Between the acts, the interval music perfectly matched the mood-featuring fun, thematic tracks such as Madness’ "Baggy Trousers” and Alice Cooper’s “School’s Out” the lively tunes got the audience tapping along, clearly loving the energetic soundtrack that maintained the buzz and lifted everyone’s mood.
The entire cast performed with confidence and enthusiasm, clearly having as much fun on stage as the audience did watching them. Special credit goes to the actors playing Chief Inspector Bollard, Mrs Macintosh, and the mischievous ensemble of crooks- with Hans standing out for his witty and impressively consistent German accent. Each brought their characters to life with fantastic comedic timing and unforgettable stage presence.
One of the true highlights was Mrs Gunge, played to perfection with huge energy, spot-on delivery, and great interaction with the crowd. Her exaggerated expressions, booming voice, and hilarious one-liners had the audience laughing throughout. Every time she stomped on stage, you knew something ridiculous (and brilliant) was about to happen. The production made great use of a simple set, letting the storytelling and performances take centre stage.
With its fast-paced scenes, strong cast, and genuine laugh-out-loud moments, The Bangers and Chips Explosion was a joyful reminder of how fun theatre can be. A huge well done to the cast and crew! It was a fantastic night full of laughter, energy, and unforgettable characters. If you get the chance to see it, don’t miss out!
