Artwork is inspired by local people, places and landscapes

This July, the Joanna Field Gallery at the Torch Theatre will be exhibiting a collection of pictures from Pembrokeshire artists who meet weekly throughout the year to enjoy their hobby. The artwork is inspired by local people, places and landscapes from across the county.

The artists–known as the ‘Homework Club’ – many of whom met whilst attending art classes with Pembrokeshire Learning, can often be seen painting at locations across the county. And if the weather isn’t on their side they go indoors to one of their homes to paint still life subjects.

The Club members are looking forward to welcoming people to the exhibition and to gathering their thoughts on the pictures being exhibited.

Paul King, one of the artists: “It will be really good to know what people visiting the exhibition think of the artwork. We’ve tried to vary what we paint and have visited places such as Castle Martin church and Lower Town in Fishguard and we’ve produced work featuring houses, people, wildlife and each other... our pictures include all sorts really.”

Painting around the County many people have been intrigued by what they do.

“It can be a little daunting when people come up to you and ask what and why you are painting, but it starts some interesting conversations and engagement. We aren’t in it to make money, we just enjoy ourselves. We are all amateurs, some of us use ink, pencil or watercolours and it’s not often we get oils out, but it’s great fun,” added Paul.

Having exhibited their paintings at the Joanna Field Gallery last year, the group is interested to get feedback on their work. This year they are asking visitors for scores for the pictures and an overall comment. A random completed form will be drawn to win four Torch cinema tickets.

“It’s a way of engaging with people, with the aim of finding people’s favourite picture and to see what people really like and why. I’m really keen to know what people think of the pictures,” concluded Paul.

The Art Exhibition called Out and About (Most of the Time) can be seen at the Joanna Field Gallery, Torch Theatre, Milford Haven throughout July during Box Office opening hours. Visit the website torchtheatre.co.uk / Box Office: 01646 695267 for further information.
