What did Freya, our Junior Reviewer think of Sycamore Gap?

It tells the story of a club filled with students who care about the environment and work together to clean the area around the sycamore gap, but after recent events, the sycamore gap was cut down and the police suspect it's one of them. Reports of neon orange coats, the litter picking groups pin lodged into the stump and sounds of laughter, the students now gather together to discuss and maybe even figure out what happened and who in their group cut down the sycamore gap…

The set design, simple yet elegant, with a projection of the famous tree in the background at the beginning until it is cut down. Chairs and tables were set up on two different sides of the stage, a classroom filled with a table and chairs, including a whiteboard and some kind of sitting room filled with different types of chairs such as an arm chair or stool and on each of these chairs sits someone, each with jokes that made me and everyone laugh! A group of students sit on tables, the floor or chairs on the classroom side of the set.

Throughout the show, each actor stayed in character and the acting was believable and all the jokes were funny. Every time someone threw a punch line out there I found myself laughing along with everyone in the theatre. I was impressed that after someone had finished speaking, they were able to stay seated on set. No one went backstage during the entire show! Not even I would have the guts to stay on stage for that long and make it look as natural as all of them did! Even if they had props to look down at or sit there without anything to do, they made it seem as natural as turning on a tv or sitting down at a desk.

I was also impressed with the short singing at the beginning of the show. What a voice! Im amazed at how well such a young person could sing and without a stutter either. If i was there, i’d be shaking in my boots. Every actor was able to stand there and say their lines as if it's a normal conversation and I didn’t even hear a single stutter or even recognize if anyone made an error. The skill it must take! Also that everyone was able to remember where they are at what time and what they must do at a particular moment. Even with a show with not much movement it was still amazing to see people move about as if they have done this thousands of times! I also really liked that everyone was given a part and that it was fair. I didn’t see one person without at least two or three speaking lines to say. It must be hard to fit everyone into a part but in this show everyone had something to do or say. I would also like to say that the use of props was at the same time skillful but also hilarious. I didn't think a wooden pole would look so good with a pink jumper on or a police hat!

Overall, this show is a brilliant watch. I find it amazing what young people can do when given a script and a few props. The show was well put together and the acting as I said before was amazing. The show was fair and it made me feel all sorts of emotions. Laughter, sadness and happiness. Even though losing the sycamore gap tree was of course a tragedy, the way they put together this show was wonderful. Though I wouldn't recommend this to young children due to its rude humor, I would recommend this to anyone who wanting to witness them solve the crime of who cut down the sycamore gap. Can you figure it out before they can? Watch the show and find out…
