GET CREATIVE AND SEE YOUR IDEA COME TO LIFE ON STAGE

This year, the Torch Theatre has another fantastic design competition for young people of all ages to get involved in as preparations for the festive pantomime – Rapunzel get underway. Think outside the box, get creative, start designing and give it a try!

Torch’s pantomimes always include connections to Pembrokeshire, and this year is no exception as they give Rapunzel a unique West Wales spin. Look out for hair-raising adventures at sea, friendly puffins, lighthouses, lots of hair-larious jokes and songs and plenty of great chances to get involved.

The creative team at the Torch Theatre in Milford Haven love the input of the young people across the county (as well as beyond) and can’t wait to see what they’ve got to share this year. Last year’s ‘Design a Golden Object’ competition for Jack and the Beanstalk received almost 200 entries, and in 2025 the Torch wants even more!

“This year's adventure starts with you! Get involved by helping us to design one of our pantomime baddies – an evil Sea Creature! Under the command of the dastardly Mother Gothel this sea creature scares and traps our heroes deep underwater. But what does it look like? It could be part octopus, shark and stingray? Or is it more like a dolphin with fangs and tentacles? We just don't know. We're a little bit stuck and need your help!,” said Tim Howe, Senior Manager Youth &Community at the Torch.

He continued “You can send us your ideas for a design in any format. They could be made of a collage of images and textures, cut-outs from magazines, strips of material, created on the computer or they could be hand drawn – let your imaginations run wild.”

The winning entry will be used to create the Sea Creature, and will be brought to life on stage, appearing in every performance of Rapunzel with a special reference to the winning young person and their school. There are three age categories: Under 5s, 5 – 10 and 11 – 18. A winner will be chosen from each category, and an overall winner will see their design being made into an actual character for the pantomime. All the designs will be displayed in the Joanna Field Gallery at the Torch throughout December.

The deadline for entries is Friday 10 October 2025 and will give the Torch Theatre plenty of time to create the Sea Creature ready for the start of pantomime season.

All images should be on an A4 piece of paper (no bigger) and include the following information on the back:

· name of the designer,

· school / college,

· contact details.

Send entries to Mother Gothel's Sea Creature Competition, Torch Theatre, St Peter's Rd, Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire, SA73 2BU. Get thinking, sticking, painting, drawing and anything else you can think of to make your design stand out from the crowd…and good luck! Pob lwc!
