What did Riley, our Junior Reviewer think of Sycamore Gap?
In a small but famous town, where the UK’s favourite tree stood tall and proud a murder has been reported. A murder of the highest profile celebrity- a powerful… imposing figure and the evil culprit must be found. The Sycamore Gap Tree has been cut down. A tale based on real world history, and the tragic ending of an over 300 year old history. Witness the true intent behind the Torch Theatre Youth groups own spin on this tragic falling of a Titan.
So I remember hearing about the real world event of the falling of the Sycamore Gap tree. Before that I knew very little but after hearing about the loss of so much history it had me interested. The real world culprits refused to give a reason but the Youth Theatre took it upon themselves to craft a more ingenious approach to a tragic event. Why would someone do such a thing? And more importantly- how would the people who know and care react? I had seen the Youth theatres work before and was expecting a similar level of quality. This was what I was given and I was delighted. I saw a few familiar faces but happily saw some new ones as well. I was so thrilled and humoured with the new additions to the cast, with a favourite character of mine coming from an actor I had not seen previously. However some of the familiar actors were also not disappointing. Quite the opposite! I thoroughly enjoyed the familiar aspect of a cast I knew about and had become knowledgeable of as an audience member. The set also helped to fully immerse myself into the story. With a favourite and interesting part I liked was the police interview scenes. You felt as if the actors were talking to you, an interview to the audience that, when things got heartfelt, really made you feel more involved with the scenes. They were talking to you specifically and I really liked that. Plus the humour was immaculate, as I said before, one of my favourite characters was extremely humorous and that's what I loved. An over exaggerated portrayal of someone's reaction to the falling of the Sycamore gap and yet a hilarious reoccurring side character who was really animated in the way they spoke and talked.
All in all I think it’s a wonderful twist on the British modern tale and it will leave you wondering on what exactly is an appropriate reaction to anything. Even if you don’t have all the details.
