Jeffrey Hatcher’s Script is Endlessly Fascinating
Seren Vickers plays the ‘Woman – the Governess’ in The Turn of the Screw this October here at the Torch. We love ghost stories and we wondered if Seren does too! Anwen caught up with Seren to find out if she also loves things that go bump in the night.
Tell us a bit about your character in The Turn of the Screw?
The Governess is the only daughter of a poor country parson. The Governess knows little of the world. She loves stories and is easily carried away. The Governess is optimistic and a desperate romantic at heart.
Are you fond of ghosts and dark stories?
I love ghost stories. I love the dark stories that ignite your imagination and make the hairs on the back of your neck prickle.
A two person play, will this be a challenge?
‘The Turn of the Screw’ does not feel like a two-person play. The play features a whole host of characters - both seen and unseen. The Governess never leaves the stage, and shares her thoughts, feelings and confessions with her friends - the audience.
Did you know much about the story line before you were offered the part?
I was familiar with the Henry James novella, and I have always been captivated by its characters and themes.
How will you prepare for the production and get in character?
We have been rehearsing hard. Jeffrey Hatcher’s script is endlessly fascinating. The text is full of details to unlock, which we are using to build the world of Bly, bringing the mansion and its inhabitants to life.
Do any ghost / horror films appeal to you and why?
I love the original Omen films. Suspense builds with each scene and makes the tension feel unbearable.
What’s your favourite ghost / horror book and why?
I am a big fan of Stephen King. I love the way that he blurs reality with the unknown and makes you question what is real.
The Turn of the Screw can be seen on the Torch Theatre stage tomorrow (Wednesday 8 October) to Saturday 25 October. Tickets: £18-£28. To book tickets via the website visit torchtheatre.co.uk / phone the Box Office on 01646 695267 or click here.
