Torch Youth Theatre Paves the Way for Aspiring Actors

As members of the Torch Youth Theatre spring into action on stage next week with their production of Sycamore Gap, the raw talent of these young Pembrokeshire actors is evident. Youth Theatre classes are becoming ever more popular and the young people are blossoming not only on stage, but also in their acting studies and their plans for their future careers.

“Being at the Torch to me is what matters and makes me feel whole. It has really opened up drama to me”, said 15 year old Emily with Lois (14) agreeing, adding “Being in Torch Youth Theatre has given me loads of learning experiences and opportunities to express myself and make new friends.”

The play, a whodunnit titled Sycamore Gap and which is sponsored by Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority, explores environmental issues and difficult relationships, Torch Youth Theatre is a place that allows the young people to foster positive connections with one another.

Set on the day following the felling of the famous and much loved tree, Sycamore Gap the play sees the local police conducting an investigation. The members of the Eco-club are interviewed individually, and the pupils interrogate each other.

Being part of the play has led to Youth Theatre actor Connie (16) gaining confidence as she presents her case - “I’ve made so many friends and built-up confidence in people skills. Torch has taught me to understand and listen to others a lot more in scenes and when we’re discussing it as a group.”

Mel (16) adds: “The Torch Youth Theatre has helped me to express my ideas and to think outside the box when it comes to discussing the world.”

Callie, now 18, has been a member of the Torch Youth Theatre since she was around nine years old. It has not only given her the confidence to appear on stage but has encouraged her to pursue a career behind the scenes.

Callie told us:“I’ve had so many amazing experiences from playing Jasmine to Chief Weasel. The Youth Theatre has helped me realise my love for costume design / hair and make-up and helped me decide to get a diploma in hairdressing to create the stepping stones to my future.”

17 year old Ria added:

“The Torch means a place where I can escape to and dedicate myself to having fun and completely being absorbed within a script. I have been a part of so many plays and met so many great people. The group lessons have inspired me to write and understand scripts as well as deeper social issues. It has allowed me to engage and take part in mock trials and give me the confidence to pursue legal opportunities and social events.”

For many of the Torch Youth Theatre members, taking part in Sycamore Gap, has given them a real confidence boost as Darcy explains:

“Torch to me helps me put myself out of my comfort zone and to learn how to be a good member of a team.”

Dylan, 15, is new to the Torch Youth Theatre and he thoroughly loves it saying that the sessions have helped him with his confidence.

“I only joined a few months back, however it has been an absolute highlight of every week and it’s been so much fun working with Sycamore Gap. I first signed up to refine and explore my enjoyment of acting, it’s certainly encouraged me to explore the arts further, especially as I plan ahead for college.”

Many Youth Theatre members have decided to pursue a career in the world of theatre following their experiences at the Torch, and one of those young people is Lois: “The Torch has opened up the idea of pursuing the arts for me. It has given me new found confidence to speak to new people.” 17 year old Dan has also applied for Drama at University following his attendance at the Torch.

“Torch Youth Theatre has encouraged me to explore future careers in drama, producing and theatre, and I am now deciding to do A Level drama to help me on this journey” added Connie.

Seren, 16 says that taking part in Sycamore Gap and being a member of the Torch Youth Theatre has given her confidence a boost.

“Torch Youth Theatre has helped me speak to new people making it beneficial for taking performing arts in college and gaining confidence.”
