Bilingual storytelling events connecting communities and the night skies

The Torch Theatre welcomes Stars and their Consolations this March - a new intimate theatre experience looking at classic myths inspired by the stars. As part of the Wales tour, bilingual storytellers from across the country will be delivering activities and events to bring communities together and encourage people to think about traditional and new Welsh stories connected to the night skies, leading up to Dark Skies Week Wales (13-22 February).

Cysur y Sêr (the comfort of the stars) is a Welsh-led and bilingual project that is about developing stories in Welsh, environmental respect and leaving an impactful legacy for future generations, leading up to Dark Skies Week Wales and also the Stars and their Consolations tour across Wales in March-April 2026.

Cysur y Sêr is a Wales wide project led by storytelling production company Adverse Camber, supported by Theatrau Sir Gâr, Arts Council Wales, The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Colwinston Charitable Foundation, The Darkley Trust, Welsh Government, Prosiect Nos Partnership and People Speak Up.

Over the next two months, 10 bilingual storytellers will be holding events in communities across Wales with Castell Henllys near Newport, Pembrokeshire hosting an event on Tuesday 17 February with Hedydd Hughes at the helm. Hedydd will present stories of the Night Skies for families between 11am and 3pm.

Stories of the night skies have, for generations, helped society make sense of seasonal and key events. Wales is one of the top global destinations for star-gazing, with a growing number of protected International Dark Sky Places and Reserves.

The project will also leave a lasting legacy which will be housed at the People’s Collection at The National Library of Wales, which will be an audio collection of constellation stories told in Welsh created by the storytellers involved in the project.

Dani Robertson, from Prosiect Nos Dark Skies Partnership said: “Prosiect Nos is extremely grateful to Adverse Camber and the story tellers, who will breathe new life into these stories and bring them into the hearts of communities around Cymru. This will allow a whole new generation of people to connect to the stories of the constellations, helping a nation understand what is at risk if we let light pollution block the skies, stealing the stars from future generations.”

Andrew White, Director of The National Lottery Heritage Fund said:

“We’re pleased to support Cysur y Sêr, a project that brings together storytelling, language and our natural heritage. By connecting communities with the night skies and Welsh myths, this initiative will preserve cultural heritage and inspire new stories for future generations. Made possible thanks to National Lottery players, it’s an example of how heritage can be both rooted in tradition and forward-looking.”

Stars and their Consolations can be seen on the Torch Theatre stage on Tuesday 24 March. For further information visit the Torch Theatre website www.torchtheatre.co.uk / phone the Box Office on (01646) 695267 or click here.
