The reviews from this week’s performances of The Turn of the Screw have been pouring in and audiences have plenty of strong opinions about the show. 

During its opening week, the Torch Theatre’s autumn production of The Turn of the Screw has captivated audiences, earning glowing reviews that highlight its haunting performances, inventive staging, and rich gothic storytelling. 

Adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher from Henry James’ classic 1898 novella, The Turn of the Screw invites audiences into the eerie world of Bly Manor. Seren Vickers delivers a tour de force on stage, praised for her “captivating portrayal”, for her “captivating performance” and “portrayal of a young innocent Governess on the brink of madness,” alongside a breathtaking turn from Samuel Freeman, who impresses with his ability to embody four different characters. Their on-stage chemistry is something of a wonder, holding the audience’s attention through every moment of emotional and psychological tension. 

Early reviews have described the show as “a feast for your imagination” and “a classic gothic horror unfolding before your eyes.” Others have praised “a tour de force performance” from the actors, with our community reviewer Riley claiming, “Even in the big-budget performances, I’ve never seen acting so compelling,” giving special mention to Samuel Freeman’s ability to switch characters so seamlessly - “he turns a corner and he’s a new person.” 

There have also been special mentions of the “amazing set design,” with one audience member claiming, “I thought the set design was some of the best I’ve ever seen from not only the Torch but the whole county,” adding that “the special effects on the pond with the rain and water was just fantastic!” Another praised the creative direction and subtle physical storytelling, saying they were impressed by the “simple gestures (from the actors) so you knew where the child was.” 

One audience member described it as “a unique performance - I’ve never seen anything like it before. There were moments where I thought, right, I know what’s going on… and then it completely shifted. It’s a right mind-boggler!”

Although we don’t want to give away any spoilers, many audience members have spoken about the end of Act One, calling it a moment that “takes your breath away” and “really sends a chill down your spine.”
