Trapped inside its belly with only one hour of oxygen left ...
Milford Haven has a rich history in commercial whale hunting, and more recently in modern-day marine wildlife watching where large whales are seen hunting and feeding off the Pembrokeshire coast. This November, 20th Century Studios and Imagine Entertainment carry on with the ‘whale’ theme and bring you “Whalefall” on the Torch Theatre screen.
This epic and emotional survival thriller, directed by Brian Duffield, about one young man’s encounter with a massive sperm whale has had mixed reviews. Benjamin Lee from The Guardian has given the film two stars stating that “the film has a slick studio sheen” with Weniel Ma on the Rotten Tomatoes website stating it’s a “nice to see” film rather than a “must see,” but several other reviewers are giving it five stars.
Following the death of his father (Josh Brolin), Jay Gardiner (Austin Abrams) goes diving off the central Coast of California in search of his remains, but is swallowed by a massive sperm whale. While trapped inside its belly with only one hour of oxygen left, Jay comes to realize that the hard-earned lessons his father imparted may be the key to his escape.
Benjamin Lee added: “Given this year’s deluge of shark movies, Whalefall makes an admirable initial case for finding drama elsewhere in the water. The otherworldly horror of the predicament is often wincingly effective (stomach acid burning hands, a swallowed-at-the-same-time giant squid causing added tentacled mayhem).
Whalefall (15) can be seen on the Torch Theatre screen on Friday 6 November at 7.45pm, Sunday 8 November at 7pm, Tuesday 10 November at 7.30pm and Thursday 12 November at 7.45pm. Tickets: Family: £24. Concessions: £7.00. Full: £7.50. Phone the Box Office on 01646 695267 or visit torchtheatre.co.uk for further information.
