RILEY'S REVIEWS - DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOUR AMONG THIEVES

A charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers travel on a dangerous quest to retrieve a lost tablet , but things turn sour when they run into the wrong people who want them dead! In this band of adventurers there is Edgin the leader of the group, Holga the fighter of the team, Simon the wizard and Doric a shapeshifter/druid.

I walked into the cinema. I Was imagining what a dungeons and dragons movie would have in it since it was based on a fantasy game where you could do anything with no set path so that gave the filmmakers a lot to work with and they made a great film from all of it. It was a charming heist with a lot of comedy aspects to it and a large amount was inspired from the original game but it still managed to surprise me and everyone watching. The actors such as Chris Pine really embraced the roles which gave them a more lively feel and a funny way of interacting with the other people in a way I don't think anyone else could and the characters had compelling stories and personalities that make the adventure more of a puzzle with unexpected plot twists at every corner.

The characters are funny but realistic, their stories and motives make you feel more empathetic to them and I think that the connection to the original game makes it very much enjoyable to a long time fan and a newer audience.  Also you don't need to have played the game to understand the film which is a problem in a lot of adaptations but if you have seen the old cartoons or played the original game then there are little bits of nostalgia everywhere. Some scenes trying to add depth were a little random and did not feel like they fit with the rest of the plot. I feel that with a 2 hour film they could have gathered a little bit more depth in the characters around the main plot.

All in all I think it's a really good film with compelling stories and characters which make you feel and understand them more. I really enjoyed watching this and I recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good fantasy film.
