Super Mario Galaxy Movie: Review from Riley
Our junior reviewer, Riley, encourages everyone to go and see Super Mario Galaxy Movie here at the Torch!
With Princess Rosalina captured, Bowser Jr on the loose and Princess Peach off to save her, Mario, Luigi and their new friend Yoshi race across the galaxy to try and stop whatever evil plans Bowser's tiny heir has in store.
Mario Galaxy was a very popular game in the Super Mario franchise where Mario and his Friends venture across the cosmos to reach Princess Peach. The game ends with a planet collapsing in on itself becoming a black hole and destroying everything. That’s the game. I was very curious on how they would translate such a beloved game into the film franchise. Would the film end with a black hole? I had no idea. So I went into the theatre very curious to see what they would do. No spoilers but I believe the film is a good sequel to the original. While some people believe the story is lacking I think they did good work without making it feel like a repeat of the “oh no they captured the princess” story. The visuals are beautiful and I highly recommend seeing them in the cinema. The animators outdid themselves with an artstyle that is continuous with the previous film but also uses the stellar opportunities that come with space in the Mario universe. I also think the introduction of Rosalina was pretty good, my only issue is for a new and apparently powerful character, she is in very little of the film and I would have liked to see more of her.
The combat in the film was amazing. The first scene we see with Rosalina has her fighting and the choreography is amazing, perfectly showing her powers and why she is a threat and asset. It lets us know that Princess Rosalina is no slouch and why Bowser Jr is after her. Not to say the other characters don't have amazing combat, Mario and Luigi also have amazing choreography and it genuinely surprises me that a film like the Mario movie went out of its way to make amazing fight scenes. The humour is perfectly timed and fits the characters and nothing feels too rushed. There are no jokes that feel out of place and they're all actually funny, making me laugh in theatres quite a few times.
Overall it’s a wonderful family comedy that is great for kids and is a very good sequel to the first Super Mario movie. I recommend you go see it in theatre due to the amazing visuals that you need to see on the big screen to fully appreciate.
